Nissan Unveils the 2019 Altima at the New York International Auto Show

2019 Nissan Altima Changes and Release Date

For a long time now, the Altima has been a staple of the Nissan lineup. Generation after generation, the model continues to stay modern and innovative, and that won’t change for 2019 as the Altima enters its 6th generation. At the New York International Auto Show, the 2019 Nissan Altima was unveiled with exciting changes that only heighten the anticipation ahead of the model’s future release date.

So, what can you expect once you finally get behind the wheel? Well, the list goes on and on, but we’ll try to highlight some of the major changes and upgrades received by the 2019 model.

[Read more: See what to expect from the 2018 Nissan Kicks]

New Engine Options In the 2019 Altima

One of the most exciting changes for 2019 is the addition of two new engine options. The Altima has really never struggled to deliver power and performance, but as engineering and technology change, so to must each vehicle on the road in order to provide drivers with a world-class driving experience.

The 2019 Altima will be replacing its predecessor’s 3.5-liter V6 engine with a variable compression turbo inline 4-cylinder, a first for Nissan and something that will be capable of delivering performance that rivals V6 engines. The standard engine on the 2019 Altima, however, is a 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder direct-injection engine that not only delivers thrilling horsepower, but also provides enhancements in the areas of vibration and noise.

We also can’t forget the cherry on top, which is the available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. If you’ve been looking for a sedan that offers an all-wheel drive option, you’ve finally found one.

ProPILOT Assist On the 2019 Nissan Altima

Though we can’t get into all of the fine details regarding the changes to the 2019 model (unless you want to be reading this for the next hour and a half), there is one technological addition to the Altima that we are particularly excited about. It’s part of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, and it’s called ProPILOT Assist.

ProPILOT Assist is a driver assistance technology that can reduce the amount of input required by the driver for acceleration, steering or braking during certain driving conditions. This should provide a more relaxing and less taxing driving experience than you’re used to, which is a great thing. We also can’t forget about the Rear Automatic Braking system. You’ve probably heard of forward collision warning systems, but in this case, the vehicle can help you detect objects behind you when backing up and apply the brakes to avoid a collision if necessary.

We’ve really only touched the surface when it comes to the many exciting changes you can expect from the 2019 Nissan Altima, but there’s plenty here to have us all looking forward to its release date. So, when can you get behind the wheel? The 2019 Nissan Altima is expected to go on sale in the fall of 2018, so the wait shouldn’t be long. Until then, we’ll update you on all the latest news here on the Charlie Clark Nissan El Paso blog

Nissan’s VC-Turbo Engine Brings Thrilling Performance to the Sedan Segment

What Is Special About Nissan’s 2.0-liter VC-Turbo™ Engine

These days, many drivers probably take the engine in their car for granted. The combination of reliability and power is nearly flawless in so many applications, including when it comes to Nissan vehicles. But, perhaps one of the greatest engine achievements to date from the Nissan brand is the Altima’s 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine. What makes it special?

Well, we can look at answering that question right here. After all, the power plant did just earn a place on Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list for 2020.

[Read more: Take your first look at the 2020 Nissan Sentra design]

As Nissan describes it, the VC-Turbo delivers the power of a V6 without the decreased efficiency of a larger engine. The system monitors driver input constantly and adjusts the compression ratio as needed. It can go from 8:1 to 14:1. This is done by changing the piston’s stroke, delivering a longer or shorter throw as necessary.

VC-Turbo Power Specs

All the above details no doubt played a role in why the engine was named to the Wards 10 Best list. Of course, the proof is in the pudding, as they say, or in this case, horsepower. The VC-Turbo delivers an impressive 236 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque.

There is no doubt that Nissan’s 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine is a fantastic option for anyone in the marketing for a new midsize sedan. This latest honor is simply proof that the rest of the automotive world is taking note… Nissan is doing big things. So, our recommendation would be to check out the Altima the first chance you get. In the meantime, we will keep you updated on all the latest news right here on the Charlie Clark Nissan El Paso blog

The History of the Car Steering Wheel

CATEGORIES

FAQ ,

Why Do Cars Use Circular Steering Wheels?

All of the equipment and features on your car may seem obvious now, but at some point, the decision had to be made to use that specific feature in that specific shape with that specific design. That’s exactly the case with the steering wheel. Why do cars use circular steering wheels instead of something else?

For example, why don’t we control our cars with a joystick or the yoke found in aircraft? Or, why don’t cars use a tiller, like many of the world’s first automobiles used to steer around, similar to what some boats use?

[Read more: Find out how diamonds make the Nissan Altima engine even better]

Why Don’t Cars Steer With Joysticks

Well, let’s start with joysticks. If you’ve ever used a joystick, you know that there are a range of movements. Not only can you move the stick left and right, but you can also move it up and down, as well as a combination of movements in between those four main directions.

This works great for aircraft because they need to be able to control pitch, which is the up and down movement we mentioned. They also need to be able to control roll, which is the left and right movement on the joystick. On a car, you don’t need to flip over to one side or the other and you don’t need to move up or down. You simply need to turn left or right on a flat surface. Therefore, a joystick is overcomplicated for a car.

Why Don’t Cars Steer With Tillers Anymore?

Now, the tiller is an interesting idea, and as we mentioned, many of the very first cars were operated using such a steering system. It was similar to how a boat might be steered, but even more common during the time, it was in line with how people would have been used to steering horses and horse-drawn carriages. The movement would have felt a lot like pulling the reigns on a horse to one side or another to turn.

The tiller worked OK on cars, but it still wasn’t ideal. Other steering methods that were being experimented with at the time included the steering wheel. When Alfred Vacheron used a steering wheel in the 1894 Paris-Rouen race, everyone saw its ease of use and effectiveness on display, and soon, the rest of the world was hooked on the steering wheel as the preferred method for steering a car.

Small Safety Tech Changes Come to the Altima for 2020

What’s New for the 2020 Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima entered a whole new generation last year for 2019, so with the 2020 model year approaching, what can we expect as far as changes? Well, for the most part, the Altima will be a carryover for 2020, but there are some new changes for the model that drivers will want to know about if they are considering the sedan for their next vehicle purchase.

The big change for 2020 has to do with the advanced safety technologies on the Altima. For the upcoming model year, the car will still have the exclusive Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies like ProPilot Assist, but some safety tech is more attainable.

[Read more: What colors are available for the 2020 Altima?]

The Altima’s Nissan Safety Shield 360 for 2020

To put it simply, Safety Shield 360 technology is either standard or available on the Altima, depending on the trim level you get. The entry level trim, the S model, will have the new Driver Assist Package. Included in the list of safety tech for the entry level model is Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking.

But, if you opt for the SR trim, other safety tech will now be available to you for the 2020 model. Adding to those safety technologies above, you’ll get Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. There is also a rather unique safety system in the industry, which is the Rear Automatic Braking system so that you can have some peace of mind whether driving forward or backward.

You’ll still have all the same popular features from the 2019 Altima as well, even if you buy the 2020 model, and that includes the option of two different engines. To learn more or to get behind the wheel, feel free to contact us at Charlie Clark Nissan El Paso

Diamonds are used to get some of the engine components to just the right thickness so that they are strong and dependable while still being lightweight (which will mean a better fuel economy for the Nissan Altima). History of the Nissan Altima Through 6 Generations

We recently shared news with you about the 2019 Nissan Altima and all the exciting changes that will come in the new model year. Sometimes, when a vehicle is refreshed and reborn, it’s nice to take a step back and a look back at where the vehicle has come from.

After all, the Altima is now entering its 6th generation. It was first introduced in the 1993 model year, with the first model rolling off the assembly line on June 11, 1992 in Tennessee. So, let’s take a walk back in time to look at the history of the Nissan Altima through all 6 of its generations.

1st Generation Nissan Altima

The first iteration of the Altima appeared in the 1993 model year and continued on until 1997. It was meant to be a successor of the Stanza, and in fact, it actually came with both the Stanza and Altima badging initially.

At the time, the Altima’s engine delivered 150 horsepower, which was quite a powerful output for the time. Even today, 150 horsepower is real solid for any sedan. Plus, although the technology hasn’t been wide spread until just recently, the Altima in 1993 and 1994 was available with a head-up display.

2nd Generation Nissan Altima

The 2nd generation of the Altima ran just from 1998 – 2001. Since this was at a time when airbags were just beginning to be used across the board and become included in all vehicles, it was a big deal when side airbags became available for the vehicle. Also available were standard leather seats on all GLE models.

This 2nd generation model was unique for the American market, and in fact, it was designed at a center in California. During this 2nd generation, a cassette player still existed, though it also played CDs.

3rd Generation Nissan Altima

The 3rd iteration of the Altima ran from 2002 – 2006. Many feel that the early 2000s weren’t the most exciting time for the automotive industry, and this may be true. But, the Altima seems to have been the exception, as it offered a V6 engine, had two-tone dashboard colors and an optional navigation system.

4th Generation Nissan Altima

The 4th generation was an exciting time for the Altima as well, as the first coupe variant was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2006. This is a time where technology really took off, with the Altima offering features like hands-free Bluetooth pairing, a backup camera, and intelligent key technology.

And, speaking of technology, this generation saw Nissan’s first hybrid vehicle in the form of the Altima Hybrid. It was only available in 10 states at the time, but it paved the way for a future of green mobility.

5th Generation Nissan Altima

The 5th generation is the one you are most familiar with, as it ran from 2013 – 2018. Of course, you can still get a 5th generation Altima as we write this, so we won’t go into a ton of details here.

One big addition for this generation, however, were the zero-gravity seats inspired by NASA, designed to make the driving experience less taxing for drivers. The Altima also increased in size during this time but remained light weight, meaning that the 182 horsepower engine it came with (and available 270-horsepower V6) can launch the vehicle much easier.

6th Generation Nissan Altima

Of course, this brings us to the 6th generation of the Nissan Altima. Since we’ve already described the many changes experienced by the model for 2019, go ahead and click the link below to learn all about it.
