Nissan Sentra vs. Kia Forte

There are many great cars on the market right now that shoppers will have to choose from, and two examples are the 2022 Kia Forte and the 2022 Nissan Sentra. These two compact sedans have a lot in common so some folks might have some issues choosing between the two. Engine The Sentra’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder produces two more horsepower (149 vs. 147) and 14 lbs.-ft. More torque (146 vs. 132) than Forte’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder. As tested in Motor Trend, the Nissan Sentra is faster than the Kia Forte 4-cylinder (automatic transmission tested): .7 seconds faster in the 0-60 test, .5 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile, and 2.4 MPH more quickly in the 1/4 mile. Environmental Friendliness In its Green Vehicle Guide, the EPA rated the Nissan Sentra higher (7 out of 10) than the Kia Forte (5 to 7). This means the Sentra produces up to 8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Forte every 15,000 miles.

Suspension and Handling The Nissan Sentra has fully independent front and rear suspensions for superior ride and handling. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement without compromising ride comfort. The Forte has a rear torsion beam axle with a semi-independent rear suspension. For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Sentra is 1.1 inches wider in the front and .6 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Forte. The Sentra SR handles at .89 G’s, while the Forte pulls only .81 Gs of cornering force in a Motor Trend skid pad test. The Sentra SR executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Forte (27 seconds @ .63 average Gs vs. 27.7 seconds @ .61 average Gs). Ergonomics The Sentra driver’s power window opens or closes with one touch of the window control, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths. The Forte’s standard driver’s power window switch must be held the entire time to close it entirely. The Sentra’s speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so the driver doesn’t have to adjust the wipers' speed continually. The Forte’s manually variable intermittent wipers must be constantly changed. On frigid winter days, the Sentra SV/SR’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Forte doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel. Reliability To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Sentra has a standard 150-amp alternator. The Forte’s standard 120-amp alternator and largest (GT) 130-amp alternator aren’t as powerful. A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money, and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or without a car while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates Sentra’s reliability 38 points higher than the Forte. J.D. Power and Associates 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed and provided the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Kia vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With one more problem per 100 vehicles, Kia is ranked 6th. From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than Kia vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 2 places higher in reliability than Kia.
