How often should I get my oil changed?

The general rule for when you should get your oil changed is every 3,000 to 8,000 miles. This is a pretty wide gap, and it depends on whether you’re operating in severe conditions, such as below-zero weather and short (less than five mile) trips, on a regular basis. Things like this can decrease your oil life.

It also depends on what kind of oil your vehicle is using. If you use synthetic oil, you’ll be able to go significantly longer between changes than if you use regular oil. So, although synthetic oil is more expensive, it will often save you money simply because it lasts longer.

How do I know when I need an oil change?

Signs that you should get your oil changed include:

  • Thick, dirty oil
  • Activated warning lights
  • Strange engine noises

It’s a good idea to check your oil with a dipstick. If oil is anything other than honey or amber colored or is below the full-mark line on the dipstick, it’s time to get a change.
